What Is the NRCS?
The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications, or NRCS, is the South African authority responsible for enforcing compulsory product requirements.
Safety footwear is regulated under VC 9002, the compulsory specification for personal protective equipment safety footwear. It uses the applicable requirements of SANS 20345 to evaluate product performance.
Approval is model-specific. The South African manufacturer or importer applies for approval, and the NRCS issues a Letter of Authority (LOA) with a unique approval number when the footwear type meets the requirements. That number must correspond with the approved model and product marking.
Why Is NRCS Approval Important?
NRCS approval provides legal market-access evidence for safety footwear covered by VC 9002. It helps importers:
