7 Safety Glasses Mistakes Construction Workers Should Avoid

Publish Time: 2026-07-24     Origin: Safetoe Academy

Learn seven common construction eye-protection mistakes, including poor fit, fogging, scratched lenses, missing side protection and uncertified safety glasses.

7 Mistakes Workers Make When Wearing Safety Glasses on Construction Sites

Safety glasses are an essential part of construction PPE, but incorrect use can significantly reduce their protective performance.

Here are seven common mistakes workers and safety managers should avoid.

1. Wearing Ordinary Glasses Instead of Safety Glasses

Prescription glasses and sunglasses are not automatically designed for workplace impact hazards.

Workers who need vision correction should use certified prescription safety glasses or OTG eyewear that fits correctly over their normal glasses.

2. Ignoring Side Protection

Concrete fragments, metal particles and wood chips may approach the eyes from different directions.

Construction eyewear should provide sufficient side coverage and remain stable when workers bend, turn or move.

3. Continuing to Use Scratched Lenses

Scratched lenses can reduce optical clarity, create glare and make tools, steps and moving equipment harder to see.

Korvion™ scratch-resistant technology helps improve resistance to abrasion and daily workplace wear. However, eyewear should still be replaced when scratches affect visibility.

Learn more through the Safetoe Technology Centre.

4. Removing Glasses Because of Fogging

Heat, humidity, masks and temperature changes can cause lenses to fog.

Removing eyewear during drilling, cutting or grinding immediately exposes the eyes to workplace hazards.

Veratopium™ anti-fog technology helps maintain clearer vision in humid and changing environments.

5. Accepting Poor Fit and Discomfort

Safety glasses that pinch, slide or create pressure points are less likely to be worn throughout the shift.

Flexentra™ comfort technology uses ergonomic and soft-contact components to improve fit, stability and long-term comfort.

6. Not Replacing Damaged Eyewear

Safety glasses should be replaced when:

●  The frame is cracked or distorted

●  The lens becomes loose

●  Side protection is damaged

●  The strap or foam lining deteriorates

●  Scratches affect visibility

●  The glasses no longer fit securely

Companies should include safety eyewear in regular PPE inspection and replacement programmes.

7. Choosing Uncertified Products

Industrial safety glasses should have clear product markings, test reports and certificates.

Common occupational eye-protection standards include:

●  ANSI/ISEA Z87.1

●  EN ISO 16321

●  CE EN166 for products certified under the earlier European standard

A product tested under one standard should not automatically be described as certified under another.

Improve Construction Eye Protection

Effective construction eye protection requires more than issuing one pair of safety glasses.

Workers and employers should select certified products, maintain clear lenses, solve fogging problems, check fit and replace damaged eyewear promptly.
